Having twins or multiples can feel like a whirlwind—especially when it comes to sleep. Suddenly, you are juggling not just one baby’s schedule but two or three! But here’s the good news. It is possible to create consistent sleep routines that work for everyone, giving your little ones the rest they need and giving you a chance to catch your breath.

The Power of Synchronization - Why Matching Schedules Matters
One of the biggest advantages for twins or multiples is that they’re often accustomed to a NICU environment, where feeding schedules and sleep are tightly managed. Even if your babies didn’t have a NICU stay, starting a consistent sleep routine as early as possible makes a world of difference.
The trick is to synchronize schedules. Wake them at the same time, feed them together when possible, and maintain similar nap and bedtime routines. A little flexibility is okay, especially if you are flying solo. Even a 15–30 minute buffer between babies works, but keeping their days and nights aligned will help everyone sleep better. When your babies sleep at the same time, you are more likely to grab a solid stretch of rest too, which can feel like winning the lottery as a parent.

Group Harmony Meets Individual Needs
The thing about twins is, while they benefit from synchronized schedules, each baby also has unique needs. One twin often takes the lead in establishing sleep and feeding schedules. Let’s call this twin A. Twin A’s rhythm usually guides twin B’s, making it easier to manage wake-ups and naps.
Following twin A’s lead does not mean ignoring twin B. It just makes it easier to create a consistent sleep routine for both babies. Honor the twin who sets the pace, and you’ll notice the other twin will naturally fall in line. This balance between group harmony and individual needs is a game-changer for parents of multiples.

Should Sleep Spaces be Together or Separate?
A common question I hear is whether twins should share a sleep space. My advice? Start with the same sleep area, like a shared bassinet with a divider. But eventually, separate sleeping spaces usually work better.
Investing in two bassinets or cribs prevents one baby’s movements from waking the other. Pair this with separate white noise machines to encourage consistent sleep habits, letting each baby get used to sounds of the other while still getting peaceful rest.
This method often keeps twin B sleeping even when twin A wakes in the middle of the night.

Calming Bedtime Routines for Twins
A calming bedtime routine is essential. Bath, feeding, a gentle lullaby—whatever soothes your babies works. Stick to it every night. This helps babies associate certain cues with sleep, making newborn sleep training smoother.
Twins benefit from doing these steps together. Waking, feeding, and bedtime rituals in tandem make consistent sleep routines stick faster, and it trains both babies to expect sleep at similar times. You’re not just managing chaos—you are teaching healthy, lifelong sleep habits.
Feeding Schedules: A Secret Weapon for Sleep
Feeding two babies at once might feel impossible, but establishing feeding schedules is key to encouraging consistent sleep habits. Synchronized feeding helps babies feel secure, reduces fussiness, and improves newborn sleep training.
If you have a partner, coordinate to feed both babies together. Flying solo? A slight buffer is okay. Even small windows of synchronicity help babies fall into predictable patterns, creating more restful nights for everyone.

Give Yourself Grace as a Twin Parent
Yes, raising multiples is overwhelming. You will need patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor. Stick with your consistent sleep routines, calming bedtime routines, and synchronized feeding schedules, but don’t beat yourself up if some nights don’t go as planned.
A sleep consultant can help if you’re feeling stuck. They provide guidance tailored to your family, helping to iron out nighttime challenges without judgment. Remember, double the babies is double the love—and with structure, double the sleep is not impossible.
