Hey there, fellow parents! I know how frustrating it can be when you are trying to figure out what your little one needs for a good night’s sleep. With so many products out there, it is easy to get overwhelmed. But let me tell you something—creating the ideal comfortable sleep environment for your baby or toddler doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about sticking to the basics and focusing on the things that really matter.

As a Lead Pediatric Sleep Expert, I’m here to walk you through five simple yet essential things that will make a huge difference in your child’s sleep—and yours too! These tips are based on what I have learned from working with families and seeing firsthand what truly helps babies and toddlers sleep better. And the best part? You don’t need to go on a spending spree buying every sleep gadget out there. So, here we go!

1. Independent Sleep Space – A Safe and Cozy Start

When you first bring your baby home, you’ll need a comfortable sleep environment that allows them to sleep safely, and that starts with their sleep surface. A bassinet is a great way to begin, allowing you to room-share and keep them close. But as your baby grows, it's time to move them into a crib—whether it’s in your room or their nursery.

Here’s the thing: babies sleep training begins with a firm, flat mattress in their crib or bassinet. This is non-negotiable. You want their sleep space to be safe and simple, with no blankets, pillows, or bumpers. Just a fitted sheet and a firm mattress. That’s it!

When it comes to putting your baby to sleep, always start them on their back. As they get older and start rolling over, they may find their own comfortable sleep position, but it’s best to begin with consistent sleep cues like putting them down on their back.

2. Swaddle ‘till 12 Weeks, Then Transition to Sleep Sacks

Now, I know many of you have heard a lot about swaddling and for a good reason! Swaddling can be incredibly helpful for your newborn, especially in those first few weeks. It mimics the snug feeling of being in the womb and can help soothe your baby.

For newborns up to 10-12 weeks old, I recommend swaddling with a product like SwaddleMe or Swaddle Lini (which I’m loving these days!). Once they outgrow the swaddle, it’s time to move to a sleep sack.

The sleep sack is a must for a safe sleep routine. It is easy to use and eliminates the need for loose blankets. What’s important here is the TOG rating. For the warmer months, use a lower TOG (like 1.0), and for cooler months, go for a higher TOG (like 3.5). This helps regulate your baby’s body temperature while keeping them cozy all night.

Speaking of temperature, we want it to be just right for a comfortable sleep environment. The room temperature should ideally be between 68-72°F (20-22°C). Not too hot, not too cold—just cozy enough to help your baby (or toddler) sleep soundly through the night.

Here’s why it matters: babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as we can, and if the room is too hot or cold, it can disrupt their sleep, leaving them restless. If you’re not sure what temperature is best, this range is a good place to start.

3. Invest in a Video Monitor – Keep an Eye on Things (Without the Stress)

As much as you want to stay close to your baby, there comes a time when they’ll need to sleep in their own space, and that’s when a video monitor becomes your best friend. It helps you stay connected to your baby while giving you the peace of mind you need to get some rest.

Whether you go with a closed-circuit monitor (my personal favorite for reduced anxiety) or a Wi-Fi-enabled one, make sure it gives you a clear view of your baby. I prefer a simpler, less tech-heavy option to keep things stress-free. I personally loved the Motorola monitor back when my kids were little, and it still works!

4. White Noise – The Secret to Deep Sleep

White noise works wonders by mimicking the soothing sounds of the womb and blocking out background noise that could disrupt your baby’s sleep. It is not just about drowning out sounds. It helps babies get into deep, restorative, non-REM sleep, which is crucial for their development.

When using white noise, keep the volume around 50 decibels. It's not too loud, just enough to help your baby sleep deeply. My all-time favorite white noise machine is the Yoga Sleep Dome—it creates pure white noise and works like a charm.

5. Blackout Curtains – Make It Dark as Night

Finally, let’s talk about light. Or, more specifically, lack of light. I know it’s hard to get a perfect “cave-like” dark room but trust me, it’s worth it.

Blackout curtains are a must for naps and overnight sleep. When your baby’s room is dark, it helps boost melatonin production, which encourages better sleep quality. It also helps with early morning wake-ups and short naps.
